Uhlmann Group joins the Science Based Targets initiative

The Uhlmann Group is committed to the SBTi goals of limiting global warming to 1.5 °C through a Net Zero strategy.

The Uhlmann Group has been part of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) since July 7, thus having committed itself to the SBTi’s aims that set out to limit global warming to 1.5°C through a net-zero strategy. With this, the Uhlmann Group has become part of one of the world’s strictest and most ambitious climate protection programs for companies. Alongside the measures already underway, the group’s companies are working on additional specific, measurable targets that will be harmonized with the SBTi. Periodic reporting and audits will communicate information regarding the group’s progress on the way to achieving the net-zero targets. Customers and partners can review the current status on the SBTi’s website.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Matthias Niemeyer, CEO of the Uhlmann Group, explains: “The heat records being broken around the globe right now are just one of many examples of how urgently the Paris Agreement must be implemented. Improving quality of life around the world – that’s what we see as the main significance of our business activities. This is also why we chose the SBTi. Its science-based approach ensures that measures are in accordance with the 1.5-degree target and are not merely superficial.”

Sustainability is a company-wide strategic mission

The Uhlmann Group has put together an internal task force to formulate a climate strategy including targets and to implement and oversee it. Two full-time employees from Uhlmann headquarters are collaborating with 17 Carbon Managers onsite at the individual companies and business units regarding the Group-wide climate strategy and its implementation. Initial practical measures are already in place. For instance, Cremer Speciaalmachines, Uhlmann UK Ltd., Uhlmann Höfliger Schweiz GmbH, and KOCH Pac-Systeme are already procuring 100% of their energy from renewable resources. The full scope of specific CO2 reduction targets and the measures required for them will be defined at the end of 2022 and will then be reviewed and cleared by the SBTi. The following targets have been defined: By 2030, we will be procuring 100% of our energy from alternative sources. Additionally, we will have reduced our scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% and our scope 3 emissions by 25%.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global organization that empowers companies to set ambitious climate targets that are aligned with the current findings of climate research. The focal point of the initiative is to get companies around the world on their way to halving their emissions before 2030 and achieving climate neutrality before 2050. SBTi is a partnership between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
