VARTA Consumer Batteries GmbH & Co. KGaA is a German manufacturer specialized in the research, development, production, and marketing of batteries. VARTA has a comprehensive product portfolio ranging from micro batteries, household batteries, energy storage systems to customized battery solutions.

Task

  • Development of a sustainable packaging with low film waste for button cells
  • A packaging solution that optimally meets the requirements for child safety
  • The new machine should provide more power than the previous machine

Solution

  • Combination of the Blister Machines KBS-KF and a KBS-PL
  • Development of a complete solution of packaging design and packaging technology for the optimal utilization of the machine format
  • Each button cell is placed in an individual blister and sealed that the battery is completely closed. The individual blisters can only be opened with scissors and are therefore childproof
  • The packaging is made of 80 % recycled PET and 90 % recycled cardboard

Results

  • There is a possibility to package also different types of batteries
  • Up to five button cells fit on a lid card
  • With five button cells on the lid card, the machine is able to package up to 750 button cells per minute

Our goal was the new development of a childproof packaging with a special focus on environmental friendliness. Due to the good cooperation on numerous projects and KOCH’s experience with our products, we decided to go with KOCH again. The company presented a convincing overall concept at a good price-performance ratio, covering the most uniform packaging possible while at the same time offering a high product variety.
